Name the factors that influence the plant location and site selection decisions.

1. Nearness to raw material:   It will reduce the cost of transporting raw material  the vendor's end to the plant. 2. Transport facilities:   Depending upon the size of raw material and finished goods, a suitable method of transportation  like roads, rail, water or air is selected accordingly  plant  location  is decided.  It  must  be  kept  in  mind  that cost of transportation should remain fairly small in proportion to the total cost. 3. Proximity  to  markets:   Every company is expected to serve its customers  _ providing goods and services at the time needed and at reasonable price organizations may choose to locate facilities close to· the market or away from the mm depending upon the product. When the buyers for the product are concentrated advisable to locate the facilities close to the market. Locating nearer to the market is preferred if The products are delicate and susceptible to spo...

Describe the different types of solar energy collectors in common use along with diagram.

Image
There are basically two types of solar collector: non concentrating stationary and concentrating. A non concentrating collector has the same area for intercepting and for absorbing solar radiation where as a sun tracking concentrating solar collector usually has concave reflecting surfaces to intercept and focuses the sun's beam radiation to a smaller receiving area thereby increasing the radiation flux.     Stationary Collectors: These collectors are permanently fixed in position and do not track the sun. Three types of collectors fall in this category: 1.  Flat plate collectors (FPC) 2.  Stationary compound parabolic collectors (CPC) 3.  Evacuated tube collectors (ETC) 1. Flat-plate Collectors (FPC): A typical flat-plate solar collector is shown in Fig. (1). When solar radiation passes through a transparent cover and impinges ·on the blackened absorber surface of high absorptivity, a large portion of this energy is absorbed by the plate and then tra...

Explain the importance of aesthetic considerations in machine design. What is Ergonomics? Discuss its scope in machine design.

While aesthetics and appearance have always played a role i n product and system design, this role will dramatically change in the 21st century as the society and. market become more sophisticated and the manufacturing technologies become further developed. To complete and succeed in the market place, manufacturers will have to look beyond reliability and physical quality, and pay more and more attention to the aesthetics and subjective quality of their products. Aesthetics deals with the appearance of the product. I n a present day of buyer's  market, with a number of products available , in the market having most of the parameters identical, the appearance of the product is often a major factor in attracting the.! customer. This is particularly true for consumer durables like: automobiles, refrigerators (domestic), television sets, music systems etc. Aesthetics is defined as a set of principles of appreciation of beauty. It deals with the appearance of the product. App...

With neat sketches describe the working principle of Hermetically Sealed Compressor.

Image
A hermetic or sealed compressor is one in which both compressor and motor are confined in a single outer welded steel shell. The motor and compressor are directly coupled on the same shaft, with the motor inside the refrigeration circuit. The compressor does exactly as its name says: it compresses the refrigerant. The compressor receives low pressure gas from the evaporator and converts it to  high pressure gas. As mentioned earlier, as the gas is compressed, the temperature rises. The hot refrigerant gas then flows to the condenser. A, refrigerator does not cool items by lowering their original temperatures; instead, an evaporating gas called a refrigerant draws heat away, leaving the surrounding area much colder. Refrigerators and air conditioners both  work on the principle of cooling through evaporation. Sealed or hermetic type, however has no need for the shaft seal. These are usually made in capacities from 0.4 kW to 110 kW. Sealed compressor for R-12 and for 2 are...

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Globalization with respect to India.

Globalization  refers to a scenario where countries and nations around the world becomes inter-connected and interdependent for meeting their needs, both internal a external, characterized by:  advanced transportation system (road, sea, and air) between countries, movement of capital between countries in the form of investments, cross-border transaction of goods and services, wide scale financial transactions between nations, movement and settling up of people i n foreign countries, inter-exchange of labor between countries, both skilled and unskilled, flow of raw-materials, semi-finished goods, finished goods, and services to foreign countries, flow of resources from one country to another, both material and human resources, massive use of technology including internet technologies, transfer of technology and including defense technologies, international treaties for defense and security tie-ups, and massive exchange of knowledge between countries. The advantages or merits of...

The function of unloading valve with a diagram.

Image
Unloading valves are pressure-control devices that are used to dump excess fluid to the tank at little or no pressure. Unloading valves are similar to Pressure Relief Valve. Both types of valves send fluid back to a tank when a preset pressure is reached. However, unlike a Pressure Relief · Valve, which is activated using pressure from its own line. The Unloading Valve dumps  the fluid when the fluid from an external line reaches a certain pressure. A common application is in high-low  pump circuits where two pumps move an actuator  at a high speed and low pressure. The circuit then shifts to a single pump providing a high pressure to perform work ,It is used in application in which the first portion of cylinder stroke requires - High Flow (Speed) and Low Pressure (Force) for the reminder of the cylinder stroke which requires- Low Flow and High Pressure. A pilot-operated  unloading relief valve is the same as a pilot-operated relief valve with the addition of an...

State the working principle of a Parabolic trough collector with a neat sketch.

Image
A parabolic trough is a type of solar thermal collector that is straight in one dimension and curved as a parabola in the other two lined with a polished metal mirror. The energy of sunlight which enters the mirror parallel to its plane of symmetry is focused along the focal line, where objects are positioned that are intended to be heated. For example food may be placed at the focal line of a through which causes the food to be cooked when the trough is aimed so the sun is in its plane of symmetry. Further information on the use of parabolic troughs for cooking can be found in the article about solar cookers. For other purpose there is often a tube frequently a Dewar tube which runs the length of the trough at its focal line. The mirror is oriented so that sunlight which it reflects is concentrated on the tube which contains a fluid which is heated to a high temperature by the energy of the sunlight. The hot fluid can be used for many purpose. Often it is piped to a heat engine ...
